Toy Story 5 Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Versus a Digital Device
It has been 30 years since the original Toy Story movie debuted, launching Pixar as a major film company and introducing audiences to beloved characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
In 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed recently, offering a brief look into the plot but leaving fans curious how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang
In the teaser shows Bonnie — who received the toy collection when he left for college — receiving a latest toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie gets her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.
Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the characters appear to consider it as a threat coming to replace them, which it probably is.
Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
One thing the teaser doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and helping giveaway items find good homes.
Surely, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have come back with Woody. And what about Duke Caboom (the star)?
Connections from the Last Installment
At the very least, some elements are continuing from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his fresh path was hand over his symbol of authority to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip shows the insignia pinned to her outfit.
It is hoped she is remains the key figure among the toys.
Toy Story 5 debuts on June 19, 2026.
